One of my favourite artists, and feminist icons, is the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo. She began painting self portraits that reflected her pain and suffering after she was severely injured in a bus accident. Kahlo’s inability to bear a child, after the injuries she sustained in the crash, was painfully close to her. She had had one abortion when it was clear that her health would not allow her to go through with the pregnancy. When she became pregnant again a couple of years later, she miscarried. Later in life Frida’s obsession with not being able to bear children lead to recurrent references to sex and fertility in her paintings.
